“Gettin’ Harlem into the Black” has several meanings.

“Into the Black” means in the profit.

“Into the Black means the people.”

They are very related and this relationship is the main focus of this site.

Typically, when people discuss development, they speak in terms of physical infrastructure developments. For example, more freeways, new commercial buildings and large companies to assume these spaces to anchor development. While this type of development has some merit, typically the development of “the people” who live in these communities is overlooked in the analysis. These projects may offer a certain percentage of temporary local jobs, to the average citizens, but very little input/role in the long-term value of these ventures.

Black in Harlem
starts with the people (our youth) and is based on education being the main vehicle for community development. Philosophically speaking, the more educated the people in a community become, the more developed the community will become.

Black in Harlem means “Black People.” Imagine where America would be today if slavery never existed in America and the “Black Codes/ Jim Crow laws” that segregated America, supported Black inventors like George W. Carver, Garret Morgan, Lewis Latimer, Dr. Charles Drew. Despite the laws of injustices they overcame to still invent, what could they have accomplished if society did not attempt to limit them by their color? We will never know.
Imagine how many more inventors that were lost in the fields when they should have been in laboratories making America great!

Today, 2016, we see the signs of Jim Crow have been torn down some 50 years ago and yet we know throughout America, Black communities continue to suffer from economic bondage. Don’t get me wrong, there are some individuals from these neighborhoods who have attained a certain level of career success, but show me one successful African- American community in America.

We plan to change this

On the backs of our ancestors we stand today with a vision of building something for our children and their children. We call it #Familyhood. As I said earlier, “we start with the children first.” #Familyhood identifies the school in every community as the nucleus for community development. #Familyhood utilizes the schools inter-generational population as the governance for school based food related start ups. To illustrate, #Familyhood is driven by two main motto’s. 1) The Friends of School Motto and 2) The Mo’ Better Food Motto. The Friends of School motto says, “every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association. The Mo’ Better Food motto says, “every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.” The Friends of Schools three main organizations in collaboration is the schools #Familyhood. Their job is to start/manage the school based enterprises of “Mo Better food.”

How and where does this begin?

It starts with #1stSaturdays – The Official Monthly Volunteer/ Recruitment Day. #1stSaturdays is the “do now” strategy of advancing a school towards #Familyhood. Basically, starting on October 1st, 2016 at various high schools in Sacramento and around the world, 1stSaturdays.com is promoting schools members of the schools Student Government Associations, Parent Teacher Associations and Alumni Associations to register their schools as sites to advance their schools towards “Familyhood.
If the school does not have one or any of these organizations functioning (which is very typical in African-American communities) schools should still start on October 1st and strengthen these organizations each and every month.

In addition to the above direct strategy of improving our communities from the children up, consider joining our business directory, etc to promote your business.

#Familyhood, the collaboration of a schools Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni at school sites begins with 1stSaturdays.com. Sign your school up to begin building your school based membership organizations first. Also invite local business partners to share what they do, sort of like a career day during 1st Saturdays. If your school does not have a garden, spend some time during your 1st Saturday to identify a location for a garden. Also allow time for representatives of each organization to share updates of their organizations affairs. The more your students hear from their alumni, the more your school plants a seed in their minds of our youth to become future graduates and return as Alumni have returned back for them. October 1st, 2016 just around the corner, sign your school up advance your school towards #Familyhood.
